Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent
Scripture from today’s Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 105:4-5, 6-7, 8-9
A reflection on today’s Sacred Scripture:
Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I am.
“How could God send his Son Jesus, whom He loved so much, to suffer such an agonizing death?”
My answer came when I was led to the most reverent church I had ever been in. Its chapel held a lifelike statue of Jesus, scourged. At first I was taken aback at the bloody detail; the open wounds on His body were realistic, leaving nothing to the imagination. I winced. His face revealed the pain He endured from the large crown of thorns pressing into His skull, and for the pain He suffers for our sins.
As I looked into Jesus’ eyes, they revealed such deep sorrow. My tears came fast. God the Son became like us so we would see His willingness to obediently bear such severe punishment for the sins of the world! His walk to the Cross was meant to show us how far He would go to bring us back to Him. This understanding drew me closer, as a deeper love for Him immediately took hold of me.
For us men and for our salvation,
He came down from Heaven and became man.
God from God,
Light from Light,
True God from True God.
