St. Matthias, apostle

Scripture from today’s Liturgy of the Word:
Acts 1:15-17, 20-26
Psalm 113:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
John 15:9-17

A reflection on today’s Sacred Scripture:

This I command you: love one another. (John 15:17)

Jesus’ disciples had quite an incentive to love their neighbor – they had Jesus standing right in front of them repeating His Father’s order, “This I command you: love one another.”

It’s not easy for us, especially with people we find hard to love. But Jesus didn’t ask us to love everyone, He told us we must! We don’t have Jesus standing with us to remind us of this, but we do have the Holy Spirit, who can help us find patience and kindness when we are stretched for it. How can God possibly deny us when we ask Him to help us be loyal to His own law?

If we pray that our heart might grow a little larger, then the next time we see that person who irritates us, we can be sure that the “nudge” we feel is coming from the One who finds it easy to love us all.
