A reflection on today’s Sacred Scripture:
Along the way of my faith-journey, I learned that I should never compare my spiritual advancement with that of other Christians. While some people seem to be moving swiftly along a spiritual superhighway, others appear unhurried on their rutted, one-lane path. Regardless, we mature, each at our own pace according to God’s design, so we should never envy or compete, but continue to learn from others while passing our knowledge along.
Sometimes we can even learn from others’ mistakes. In today’s Gospel, John believed he was doing the right thing when he tried to avert another’s Christian service, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” (Mark 9:38) But when Jesus replied, There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me.” (Mark 9:39) John learned that only God can determine the validity of a man’s deeds.
Even when the good works of others seem out of place to us, we shouldn’t hinder, but encourage, as we’d like to be encouraged, in order to smooth the progress of our own mission.
